Your mind says you should feel better by now, but your body is telling a different story. Now let me describe what many of my clients have told me. You've pulled back your schedule, taken more days off, maybe even cut back your client load. You're sleeping more, you're eating better. You've done the self-care checklist, but your energy still fragile. You wake up already tired. You've lost any enthusiasm for your work or hobbies you used to love. You dread your inbox. Your brain feels foggy. And part of you wonders if you're just getting older or something is permanently broken inside you. You aren't really that old, maybe mid forties or early fifties. you try to stay positive, but secretly you're afraid. What if I never fully get my energy back? What if it's all downhill from here? The good news is you're not broken, and it's not just getting older. Something deeper is happening. Let's talk about it. What you're experiencing is not ordinary tiredness. You are dealing with not just physical burnout, which is when your adrenal glands stop functioning like they're supposed to. Your liver is on the fritz and your thyroid glands might be suffering, but energetic burnout where your entire system is drained at the level of your nervous system, your energy field, and your emotional body. Or body, mind and spirit. When you stay in survival or defense mode too long, carrying, responsibility, absorbing other people's emotions and demands, managing crises, your system shifts into what's called a perpetual depletion loop. Where you are so worn out that even simple daily tasks feel like a struggle. And once that loop starts, no amount of extra sleep or surface level self-care will fully restore you because the real issue isn't physical rest. It's energetic overload. Here are the signs to watch for to see if you are in that perpetual cycle of depletion. Sleep no longer refreshes you. You feel heavy when you wake up as if your body didn't fully reset overnight. Tasks, even simple ones that used to feel easy, now feel overwhelming. You avoid decisions or feel paralyzed by even simple choices. You experience brain fog, forgetfulness, or emotional numbness. Even when you do nothing, you feel like you need to recover. This is your nervous system telling you, you've been carrying too much for too long and your reserves are gone. So what do you do about it? The first shift isn't to push harder, trying to pull yourself up by your bootstraps to get going again. Trust me, I know. That just makes it worse. Your first step is to stop adding energy burdens that aren't really necessary. Start with a simple question as you move through your day. What can I release today that isn't truly mine to carry? You are not responsible for every outcome, every emotion, or every situation around you. Take a whole day off, do nothing. Go outside, sit in the sun. If it's sunny. Notice, did anything fall apart? Did anything fall through the cracks? Instead of getting emotionally caught up by the turmoil, others create around you, just sit back and observe. Do you really have to fix it? Is it yours to fix? This can help you gently release one small responsibility at a time that doesn't belong to you. You begin to close up all of those little energy leaks. And the more you do this, the more time you give your nervous system to recover. Use some energy tools that are available for you to recover, meditate, go stand barefooted on grass or sand. Use a superhero pose to help relax your adrenal glands further, breathe deeply and slowly for a few breaths. Write down what you're grateful for every day, and do some energy hygiene like cutting cords. When the leaks close, your system finally starts to rebuild from a place of safety, not survival.
